A Longitudinal Study Of Engineering Student Performance And Retention
As
part of an ongoing longitudinal study, the author taught five chemical
engineering courses in consecutive semesters to a cohort of students,
using cooperative learning and other instructional methods designed
to address a broad spectrum of learning styles. This paper outlines
the policies and procedures, assignments, and classroom activities in
the experimental course sequence and describes the students' performance
and attitudes as they progressed through the sequence.
Redesigning Higher Education: Producing Dramatic Gains in Student Learning
How
effectively are we educating our students? What are the critical competencies
and how do they develop? The research literature of higher education
contains many valuable findings that can help us answer this question
and provide essential guidance to significantly improve our students'
learning.
Student-Centered Lecturing
Students
first must decide among themselves how best to achieve coverage of the
assigned reading, roughly dividing responsibilities for beginning, middle,
and end. They negotiate about how they will accomplish this by phone
or, more frequently, e-mail.
Studying Lives through Literature: Using Narrative to Teach Social Sciences
and Promote Students' Epistemological Growth.
The
author argues for the inclusion of narrative literature in social science
courses. Narrative literature enhances students' understanding of scientific
content by elucidating theoretical and empirical concepts with concrete
examples. Narrative also may promote students' epistemological growth
by demonstrating how truth and reality are constructed differently by
different ways of knowing.
