Diversity and Complexity in the Classroom: Considerations of Race, Ethnicity,
and Gender
The
following ideas, based on the teaching practices of faculty across the
country and on current sociological and educational research, are intended
to help you work effectively with the broad range of students enrolled
in your classes.
Encouraging Students In A Racially Diverse Classroom
When
teaching in a multicultural context, we suggest that teachers prepare
themselves in several ways. (1) Begin to assess one's own conscious
and unconscious biases about people of cultures other than one's own.
(2) Plan the course with the multicultural context in mind: to think
of syllabi, course assignments, and potential classroom dynamics in
these terms...
Sensitivity to Women in the Contemporary Classroom
As
teachers, it is important for us to understand the shifting pressures
affecting this generation of students if our efforts are to be relevant
to them. Our attempts to promote standards of equality may seem awkward
to students for whom the gender roles of the past have new meaning,
and are adopted or rejected for different reasons than our own. Even
the remedies at our disposal may seem as patronizing to these students
as the paternalism that we intended them to replace.
Responding to Student Diversity
Do
you know how to respond to different kinds of students? Why is this
a problem? When cultural differences are not dealt with effectively,
students don't learn well or they drop out of college altogether. This
happens because they don't feel like they "fit in" or, worse,
they don't feel welcome.
The Older Language Learner
Can
older adults successfully learn foreign languages? Recent research is
providing increasingly positive answers to this question.

Approaches to Modeling Diversity in the College Classroom: Challenges
and Strategies
A
team of psychology professors discusses the challenges they faced in
teaching a curriculum based on multicultural theory. They identify three
challenges: the large volume of scholarship on diversity, student resistance
to diversity issues, and their own attitudes toward diversity.
Teaching and Learning Series on Diversity
The
series on diversity is a collection of monographs on embracing diversity
in teaching and learning published by the Faculty Teaching Excellence
